Course outline

What is the course about?

The aims of this course are to build confidence and to help you to prepare for further study.

What topics will we cover?

The content of the course will be decided by consultation between students and tutor, so that the particular needs and interests of the group can be covered. This will happen at the first meeting, so bring your ideas.
Topics requested by previous students have included:
- Getting more out of what you read
- Getting ideas down on paper
- What makes a good sentence or paragraph
- Spelling rules
- Enriching vocabulary
- Discussion, thinking and memory
- Coping with panic
- How to get started on homework.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- be more aware of the learning process
- read and use books with greater confidence and understanding
- write more accurately and confidently
- Recognise the importance of curiosity, questioning and argument in learning.

What level is the course?

The course is introductory. There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to be able to communicate information and opinions clearly in writing.

How will I be taught?

Teaching and learning will be activity-based and there will be suggested homework activities to supplement the learning in class.

Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

There are no additional costs, but you will need a supply of A4 paper and some pens. Handouts will be supplied and you will be encouraged to join the City Lit library. Help with childcare costs is also available. Phone the City Lit Information and Advice Shop on 0207 492 2500 for more information.

What feedback will I get?

You will get regular written feedback from the tutor on the work you hand in. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The course can be a self-contained experience but may also lead on to further study e.g. an Access course, the longer Return to Study programme, or a GCSE course.

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Information and Advice Shop, open daily 11:00 - 19:00 Monday to Friday, 10:00 - 14:00 Saturday during term and 12.00 - 17.00 Monday to Friday during non-term. See the programme guide for further details.
