What is the course about?

This module aims to develop and establish in students:
Advanced knowledge of the structure of BSL and fluency in its use.
This knowledge will enable students to start collecting evidence towards their Level 4 NVQ in BSL.

Detailed, in depth knowledge of the key distinctive features of BSL
Critical assessment of up-to-date information on current issues and activities within the D/deaf Community
Evaluate personal opinions and values as well as factual information
Cognitive Skills
Critically discuss routine work-related activities in BSL and show evidence of being able to use the necessary skills Present and respond to differing lines of detailed reasoning
Evaluate and assess own language performance Provide evidence of understanding of BSL grammatical principles Subject Specific Skills
Have the ability to maintain a conversation naturally in BSL on a range of topics
Use BSL fluently and correctly in a range of situations, settings and registers
Transferable Skills Researching D/deaf issues
Delivering prepared presentations in BSL
Fully contribute to routine work-related meetings and discussions
Using different and appropriate registers in BSL when communicating with work colleagues and professionals.

What level is the course?

Undergraduate degree. On completion of this module you will be awarded credits toward a BA (Hons) Deaf Studies Communication Support and Education.

How will I be taught?

Small group work, video work, role-play discussions and demonstrations are all used to develop and enhance students Sign Language skills.
Assessment Scheme:
Portfolio (80%)
Critical review (20%): providing a critical review of one current issue within the D/deaf community (3,500-4,500 words)
N.B. Dates for submission will be staggered to allow focus on submission of portfolio prior to submission of the critical review.

N.B. Dates for submission will be staggered to allow focus on submission of portfolio prior to submission of the critical review. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
