Tutor Bio
Jemma Kennedy is a playwright and novelist. She has taught many writing courses and workshops for adults including those at the Arvon Foundation, and lectured in scriptwriting at Manchester Metropolitan University for two years. She has published a novel (Skywalking, Penguin 2002), and began writing for theatre after winning a place in the Royal Exchange Theatre’s Write # 2 Festival in 2004, which resulted in a writing attachment. In 2005 she was awarded a Jerwood Arvon Young Playwright’s Apprenticeship for her play The Windmill. Recent work includes an adaptation of The Seagull, (Tabard Theatre, 2006), Evensong (Shropshire tour 2006) and an afternoon play for Radio 4.
The course wil cover the basic elements that are necessary in the making of a play, i.e characterisation, theme, plot, subtext, dialogue and style (naturalism, expressionism, surrealism).
- respond to and assess pieces of writing with sensitivity.
- identify and analyse the various elements such as characterisation, theme, plot, dialogue and style.
- work towards a First draft of dramatic text.
This is a stage 1 course - a compulsive interest in drama - through reading plays or going to the theatre plus a love of dialogue is useful.
Writing workshop/improvisations and discussion. You may be expected to produce written work at home.
Notebook/file - your preferred form of blank paper and writing implement.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
On completing Playwriting Stage 1, students may move on to Playwriting Stage 2 and/or into a drama writing course dealing with a specific medium, such as drama writing for radio or TV screen.
