Course outline

What is the course about?

Developing your own material (an existing screenplay/short) and your understanding of how screenwriting works, in a supportive and creative workshop environment.

Tutor Bio
Phil O’Shea is an established screenwriter with TV and film credits as well as six international awards to his name. He has a degree from Essex University, a diploma in Film and TV from Middlesex University and a teaching qualification. His screenwriting tutors have included iconic names such as Sam Fuller and Karel Reisz. His credits include BBH series ‘Oscar Charlie’, ‘Stig of the Dump’, ‘Dream Team’, ‘Wycliffe’ etc and last year he won an award for his scary film, ‘Vampire Diaries.

What topics will we cover?

This course will include structure, visual writing, sub-plot, characterisation, dialogue, script editing and re-writing techniques.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Respond to and assess pieces of writing with sensitivity
- Produce a more polished piece of screenwriting
- Demonstrate an awareness of technique
- Critique and assess your own and other material

What level is the course?

You should have completed either Screenwriting stage 1 or another introductory screenwriting course PLUS have an outline, screenplay or completed short from which to work.

How will I be taught?

Discussion, brain-storming, viewing film clips, reading sample scripts, pair and group exercises, some writing assignments and research.

Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

What feedback will I get?

Oral and sometimes written feedback is given by the tutor; feedback from class members while workshopping your screenplay and sharing ideas. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
