We will consider the market requirements of magazines - popular, literary, esoteric and genre - and try out various writing styles and story structures. There will be exercises and discussion, supportive feedback and advice.

What is the course about?

- What magazine editors look for in stories, both commercial and literary.
- Finding ways to try to meet editors requirements and develop a professional approach to your writing.

What topics will we cover?

discussion and analysis of short fiction in commercial magazines.
- discussion and analysis of short fiction in literary magazines.
- Online magazines.
- writing exercises to help you create commercial and literary stories of your own.
- Practical writing skills and craft suggestions.
- Feedback on your own writing.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of the market and its requirements.
- apply improved writing skills and techniques to your work.
- apply critical understanding to your own and fellow students work.
- produce new material.

What level is the course?

Good literacy skills; some creative writing experience an advantage.

How will I be taught?

Group analysis of examples.
Discussion.
Writing exercises.
Feedback from tutor and fellow students.

Paper and pens only.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
