Course outline

What is the course about?

An opportunity to further your knowledge of French language at an upper intermediate level, dealing with authentic material for an in-depth look at French society and an initiation to French literature.

What topics will we cover?

Revision of grammar in context (e.g.: past tenses, subjunctive, conditional, prepositions as appropriate). Work on pronunciation.

Themes: cinema, customs and traditions, science and technology, art, literature, social issues, current affairs.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- use the language accurately
- read newspapers and short-stories with confidence
- write short essays
- take part in discussions and debates
- talk about French civilisation.
- give presentations in French

What level is the course?

Suitable if you have done a French 4 module 2 or have recently done five years of French, have acquired an upper-intermediate level and want to move on to an advanced level.

How will I be taught?

Communicative approach, with listening and reading comprehension, writing and speaking involving group work and pair work . Please note, students are expected to participate in oral language activities. The tutor will use newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, films, visual aids etc.

Students will be asked to produce homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

Material will be provided by the tutor. Students might be advised to get a particular French grammar book and vocabulary book on the first session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

French 5.
