Exploring the emotional and interpersonal impact of personality disorder.
Understanding the meaning of personality disorder.
Developing professional competence and enhancing coping strategies for therapist and client.
The course will cover the issues and challenges faced by people with the diagnosis of ‘borderline’, ‘avoidant’, ‘dependent’, ‘paranoid ‘ personality disorders.
Strategies to overcome barriers to working effectively with personality disorders in counselling and therapeutic settings will be discussed.
Practicing clinically proven techniques and skills will be part of the course. These will aid interpersonal skills and help with coping with the challenging thoughts arising in this area of work. Difficult emotions frequently arise in the counsellor when working with issues of risk, interpersonal difficulties and ‘stuckness’.
Identifying self-help techniques which can be taught to clients, colleagues, and careers will be explored. These techniques can be used to reduce emotional arousal, increase distress tolerance and develop interpersonal effectiveness.
Have knowledge of some of the most frequently encountered personality disorder.
Identify helpful and unhelpful attitudes and ways of responding to people diagnosed with a personality disorder
Enhance professional competence and therapeutic effectiveness in working with people with personality disorders, their families or carers.
Find personal coping strategies to help you stay calm, centred, patient and focussed.
Identify how therapeutic relationships with clients can reduce ‘no show’ rates.
Describe how you are more effective in team working and service delivery.
Introductory: no previous knowledge required re. personality disorders.
The course is for those who work. paid or unpaid, in helping other people eg, social work , health services, career, counselling.
The course will be facilitated by a combination of mini lectures, pair work, small groups, experiential exercises and personal reflection in a supportive attitude.
Learners are asked to come willing to engage in self-exploration and to work experientially to assist the learning process.

In addition to tutor feedback you will also be reflecting and self-assessing your skills and knowledge. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
